STRATHCONA RAPTOR  SHELTER

October 2004

This is Zeus, a Great Horned Owl. He came to us in January 2001 from Highway 16 and Range road 11, known as the Callahoo Road. It's near Spruce Grove, Alberta. He had been hit by a Greyhound Bus

At that time he was treated at the Spruce Grove Veterinary Clinic for a bad headache. He couldn't feed himself and had some feather lice that had to go. His left eye was a bit cloudy but has cleared up pretty well don't you think? He wasn't standing up either. He has been recovering slowly and is still improving. .

Here is a picture of Zeus and Smokey. Zeus has very large eyes. They are so big that he can't move them without moving his whole head. All owls have eyes like this.

Here is a picture of Zeus looking over his back at the camera. His eyes are a lot like the headlights on a car, he has to point his head where he wants to look.

This is Smokey. He was a young owl that had trouble finding food after leaving the nest this year. Sometimes it takes an owl longer than the others to grow up.He is staying in Zeus's pen with Sir Owlbert and Zeus.
