STRATHCONA RAPTOR  SHELTER

A Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in the large flight pen.

Majestic, flat-winged gliding and soaring with occasional wingbeats......it's greater size and longer wings set it apart from other hawks. ( A Field Guide to Western Birds, Peterson Pg 56.)

Not what you want to see if you are a starling.

Merlin (Falco columbarius) Usually silent, at the nest a shrill chatter.( A Field Guide to Western Birds, Peterson Pg 60.)

A Snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca) at the Shelter. This female had a badly punctured lung.

Breeds along the arctic coasts south to Hooper Bay Alaska. ( A Field Guide to Western Birds, Peterson Pg 120.)

A group of Merlins at a photo-op.

A young Merlin.

A Black-tailed prairie dog out of the den on a warm December day near Edmonton.
